``Beloved'' is a deep, deep well of a movie, a film that ripples with meaning and metaphor and unnerving supernatural questions. Absorbing, confusing and uncompromisingly dark, director Jonathan Demme's much-awaited interpretation of Toni Morrison's novel challenges the very notion of what a movie can and should demand of its viewers.
It demands, first of all, attention. It demands an understanding of and appreciation for literary devices. It demands a patient, almost Buddha-like acceptance of sudden leaps in time or logic. It demands a bluntness of view and a willingness to watch scenes of unbearable brutality. Finally, it demands time 171 minutes of it, all of them jammed with subtlety.
